Fort Custer Recreation Area

Fort Custer is located near Battle Creek, MI. The equestrian campground is Michigan’s first public equestrian campground with electricity. Seven overnight camping sites sit just off the staging area. Each of the seven campsites features electricity, a gravel pad. Six sites are nice and wide for easy drive-in or back-in access, while the remaining site has pull-thru parking. Sites #5, #6 and #7 have 30A & 50A service, for your big trailers. Each site has its own set of 3 to 4 picket poles surrounded by sand footing for good drainage and cleanup with plenty of room between horses. Sites 4, 5 and 6 have two covered corrals each. Additionally, each site features its own fire ring and picnic table. Water is available at a hand-pump, there is a pit toilet, and a covered pavilion with picnic tables. The pavilion also features electricity.

Two trails are easily accessible near sites #1 and #6, with two more leaving from across the big parking lot. The trails, maintained by Fort Custer Horse Friends Association, are mowed regularly, trimmed as needed with some wide enough for side-by-side horseback riding. The trails have little elevation change with very good, sandy footing. With seven water crossings and over 18 miles of horse trails plus another 5 of multi-use trails, there’s plenty of trails for a weekend of riding! Water crossings all have good footing and are usually quite shallow. There are two bridge opportunities for testing your skills and confidence. Both present a different challenge.

Thank you Fort Custer Horse Friends Association for your contribution to the trail riding and camping experience in Michigan.
