Highland Recreation Area
Highland Recreation area offers 15 miles of equestrian trails that meander through breathtaking woods, fields, wetlands, marshes and at times borders a lake.
The Highland Rec equestrian trails located in Southeast Michigan consist of four main loops. The east loops (white, yellow) are relatively flat, gently rolling with wider trails, great for beginner riders. The west loops (orange, green) on the other side of Duck Lake Rd provides a more challenging ride with single track and hilly terrain accessed via a tunnel that runs under Duck Lake Rd. There are some mountain bike trails that both cross and run along the horse trails on the West loops. A few small water crossings can be found on the West loop. Riders can also ride along a multi-use trail that runs north south from the main staging area, there’s a small boardwalk on this trail.
At present there’s only one staging area within the park plans are in development for an auxiliary staging area off Duck Lake Road.
The Highland campground offers 25 rustic sites with picket poles and fire rings (site #18 is an exception). There is water available at the campground entrance and 2 vault toilets. All sites are shared with non-equestrian campers. At present there is no equine only camping with exception to the organized HTRA campouts that are twice a year.
