Proud Lake Recreation Area
The Proud Lake Recreation area is located in Southeast Michigan in Milford. The equestrian trails consist of four looped trails, two east and two west of the railroad tracks, and one multi-use spur totaling more than 14 miles of riding. The red trail heads east from the staging area, crosses a bridge and passes through gently rolling terrain that includes pine forests, mixed hardwoods and a power line right of way. The orange trail loops out from the southwest corner of the meadow at the staging area. This trail passes through mixed hardwoods, open meadows with tall bluestem prairie grass. The yellow trail, just west of the tracks is a rolling trail with some challenging hills that show off the unique glacial formations known as Kettle Moraine. This is a beautiful trail with many old growth hardwoods and open vistas. Bring your lunch so you can enjoy the view from the top of one of the hills where you will find a picnic table and hitching rail. The furthest west trail is the green trail which starts on the east side of Child’s Lake Road and provides more than three miles of riding. It loops through rolling terrain and mixed hardwood forest. And finally, the purple multi-use spur trail is a great way to extend your ride. If you want to make a full day of riding, continue to the connector trail to access 20 plus miles of trails at Kensington Metropark. Don’t miss a stop for ice cream, food or a beverage at Holden’s on Milford Rd.
The staging area, located on Garden Rd (you must access it from the west as the Garden Rd dead ends at the park) includes a pavilion, two pit toilets, a fire pit and a hand pump for water. The staging area is large and can accommodate many rigs of all sizes. A permanent equestrian confidence course was built in the meadow at the staging area for your further enjoyment of the Proud Lake area. You can camp at Proud Lake twice a year at the trail riders camping events, there are picket poles throughout the area for camping.
